I wouldn’t usually bother commenting on camera firmware updates, usually they just correct some obscure faults that I haven’t even noticed. However this one for the 7D is different.

As well as some error corrections there are a number of added features such as:

A higher number of shots when using continuous shooting mode (up to 130 for JPEG and 25 for RAW files). Great for sports and wildlife shoots.

A maximum ISO limit for Auto Iso. I’ve always shied away from Auto Iso because I don’t want the camera to select the very highest settings which loose too much quality, Now I can set a highest value of say 1600 to avoid this.

In camera editing and ranking (star rating) for JPEG and RAW files

Improved audio controls for video

I’ve upgraded my camera with no hitches, more details and download link on the Canon website

Had a play with my 5mm Sigma fisheye lens during my recent Abstract Workshop at the University of Liverpool.

I bought it to help make 360 deg panoramas as you only need three shots (well two in theory but the joins show!) but it’s great fun as long as you can keep your feet out of the shot!

As many of you know I’m a great fan of Adobe’s Lightroom for processing and cataloguing my images. Now, just as my review of Lightroom 4 Beta hits the magazine shelves in Advanced Photographer March edition, Adobe have today announced the availability of the production version.

I was pretty impressed by the new features and, even better, Adobe have reduced the prices to £103.88 for the full version and £59.09 for an upgrade from any previous version. It stiill looks expensive compared with new competitors such as Corel’s AfterShot Pro at £79.99 but it’s a step in the right direction.

Some of the highlights are:

Improved processing in the Develop module

New book making module – linked to Blurb but you can use other services

New Map module – Link your images to locations on a map

Added video support – basic editing in LR

Email straight from LR

If you’ve downloaded the Beta version it will still work up to 31st March.

So I’ve upgraded and will be having a root around to see if they have slipped any more last minute goodies (no sign of layers as yet )!

If you have a copy of Lightroom and are still baffled by what it does and how to get the best out of it I’m running workshops as part of the Epson Print Academy provided by Aspect2i. See my Workshops page for dates.

Had a great time at Focus on Imaging yesterday and managed to keep my credit card in my pocket all day … well I did buy Micheal Freeman.s ‘The Photographer’s Vision’ but that was 40% off so it didn’t really count!

I’m not really a gear freak, so the launch of the Canon 5D III sort of passed me by, I couldn’t be bothered with the crowds and for £3,000 you could have two Mark IIs. And as for a Nikon D800, well I have enough of my desk taken up with hard drives for now and 36 Megapixel files are going to be HUGE! I wonder how many of those images will ever be printed?

What I really enjoyed was meeting up with all the people I usually only contact via email. Had some great discussions and caught up with people I haven’t seen for a while which made the trip down the M6 and huge car park queues well worthwhile.

There’s still a couple of days left if you haven’t visited and Wednesday always seems to bring some additional bargains.

Following last year’s sell out Wilkinson Workshop at the Butterfly house in Lancaster’s Williamson Park, this year we are running two workshop days.

The first day was huge fun, after a morning looking at basic macro technique and a tasty lunch, we moved into the tropical heat of the Butterfly house for a couple of hours chasing our subjects for the day. They weren’t all as obliging as the one in my picture!

We spent the last hour reviewing some of the stunning images taken by workshop members and everyone went away with a print of their chosen shot.

I’m already looking forward to the next session on 24th October, you can book on line via Wilkinson Cameras website.

In film days it was hard enough to keep track of our images but with the explosion of digital images and the easy availability of Terrabytes of disk space, can you quickly find those perfect sunset images?

Fortunately Adobe Lightroom is not only a great Raw file converter but also makes finding those elusive images much easier.

This workshop will give you all the essential skills to organise and process your images. I’ve used Lightroom since version 1 and you can read my review of the new version 4 beta in this month’s Advanced Photographer. Whilst Lightroom can look intimidating, I’ll be concentrating on practical working methods and you will leave with a clear plan of action.

Although based on Lightroom, users of other workflow software such as Apple’s Aperture and the new Corel AfterShot Pro will find plenty of useful tips.

More details and how to book, see here
